Many of my scuptural pieces use the form or notion of the vessel or container as a canvas on which to explore explore relationships between inside and outside and our tangible and the intangible experiences of living in the world.

Holding the Line

Holding the Line explores lines, demarcations and thresholds placing them on the surface and within forms made of Jesmonite, base metal and sterling silver. Each piece is 19cm high.

Cup Forms

Cup Forms takes the familiar form of the handle-less cup and explores it in hollow and solid form, giving prominence to the line running up the side that hints of the join between inside and outside.

'Containers'

'Containers' plays directly with notions of 'inside' and 'outside' and especially the threshold that lies between the two. Emerging almost as 'drawings come to life' - with hand-drawn and hand-pierced edges, the pieces have an ambivalent relationship to the ideas of 'in' and 'out' both within themselves and between each other. Each piece, fabricated from patinated mild steel with sterling silver has a character of its own and its own idea of the spaces in which inside becomes outside and outside surrounds inside.

Solid Pourers

Solid Pourers play with the idea of the inside invisible space by banishing it. Taking the form of vessels – jugs or pourers of some sort – these pieces are made from solid brass with sterling silver spouts. Removing the holding space or the void from a familiar object questions the relationship between inside and outside that so characterises the way in which we orientate ourselves within the world.

Four Pourers

Four Pourers interrogates the jug form, with solids outlines and spaces. Fabricated from patinated brass, the pieces can be arranged and rearranged, each having its own character and voice communicated through its form.

Lucky for One

Imagine walking into a party where you know no one – it is likely that you would spend some moments scanning the crowd, looking for familiar faces, or familiar aspects. “Lucky for One” invites the viewer to do just that: explore the objects, seeking out their differences and their eccentricities through touch and sight, and using these to orientate themselves to the group and the individuals that make up that group.

Vessels (1-5)


Vessels (1-5) Explore the way in which vessels – or holding forms - are constructed and their holding space built. Comprising of several parts, the joins and seams are integral to each of the pieces.

Tall Vessels


Tall vessels explore the articulation of the seam that takes them from flat pieces of metal into holding forms – the threshold between sheet and form. Each vessel has a different articulation of that line, giving each piece a different silhouette.

Vessels on Base

Vessels on Base is a composition of forms which, like much of my work, can be arranged and rearranged. Made from the materials historically associated with tableware: silver, nickel silver, pewter and copper, the piece speaks simultaneously of the domestic table with forms that contain things to eat or drink and architectural forms that contain the wider comings and goings of people.


It seeks to comment on the gap between the different objects and forms that we encounter within the domestic and public spheres through which we journey everyday.

Interlocking Pair

Interlocking Pair is a dialogue between two cylinders and two, diametrically opposed materials.


The smaller cylinder has a solid top and nestles into the side of the larger cylinder, which, viewed from above, has an open top through which a view inside allows us to see the threshold of interaction between the two pieces.


Made from industrial steel and ethereal silver, this piece asks questions about interaction, interplay and the ways in which we see and understand the forms we encounter in the world.

VesselScape

VesselScape takes traditional vessel forms, abstracts them through the use of solid forms and arranges them as if they are a collection of buildings. Thus arranged, these everyday forms become different for us and their scale and appearance is transformed from the domestic to the architectural.
